WHAT CAME IN WENT OUT
Originally published in slightly different version under a
different title in St Ann's Review.

A couple was startled by a man in a yellow Ralph Lauren Polo shirt who'd walked right into their house through the open back door. They were drinking coffee in the kitchen; the man just coolly said, "hi." So the husband thought the man was a friend or colleague of his wife. The man began talking very rapidly to the husband about fly-wheels, and so the wife thought the man was a friend or colleague of her husband. The man opened the refrigerator door and helped himself to cranberry juice, straight from the jug. Some spilled on his shirt. They were beginning to realize this was strange, when, from the hook by back door, the man swiped the car keys. He went into the garage and started the Mercedes. He backed out, BLAM through the closed garage door. The man and their Mercedes have not been seen since.
